Those chosen for their leadership potential attend an all-expenses-paid livein course to learn lifetime leadership skills through practice. It is an invaluable personal and professional development program.

Since its inception, RYLA has assisted hundreds of young Tasmanians to develop leadership skills, with last year’s participants including a radiographer, a dairy farmer and a quality assurance officer; plus a refugee from South Sudan.

Past attendees from the Meander Valley include Mark Griffin, Hannah Atkins and Josh Smith. Keynote speakers last year included Robyn Moore and Stan Alves, both excellent motivational speakers. During RYLA the participants undertook a wide range of activities, both mental and physical, designed to show them how to reach their potential, or step beyond their normal limits, including a Survivors Challenge which called for exceptional team work.

This year, RYLA will be held on the 10th to 16th May at Camp Clayton, near Ulverstone. You can apply to the Rotary Club of Deloraine to sponsor you, if you are aged 18 to 30 years, by contacting Ann Axelsen on 0411 116 480.

A similar experience for 14 to 17 year olds, called the Rotary Youth Program of Enrichment (RYPEN), will be held at Camp Clayton over a weekend in May.

RYPEN sets out to broaden horizons and lift aspirations in a supervised residential weekend seminar.

Its aim is to communicate to young people a series of ideas, problems and social experiences which will assist them in forming their own values and moral standards, and broaden their horizons culturally, socially and academically.
