THE JUNE flood event put a dampener on Arts Deloraine’s ‘Winter Fire’ plans.

On Friday 3rd June two truckloads of donated mill waste was delivered to the bonfire site at the showgrounds.

On Sunday 5th June the first lantern workshop was held in the Furmage shed and the resulting lanterns hung up to dry.

The next day more than a metre of flood waters swept across the showgrounds, into the sheds and cut off Highland Lakes Road.

The bonfire wood was swept several hundred metres away resting in two piles by the riverbank and the show ring mixed up with the pony club jumps.

The lanterns fared better with only the larger ones having a little water damage on the ends.

With the showgrounds out of action, Rotary offered their pavilion for the second workshop and MVC and DDS provided the Little Theatre for the finishing one.

The response to the workshops was amazing with 119 participants over the three Sundays and 50 lanterns produced.

Enquiries are still being received together with requests for more workshops.

The lantern workshops were made possible by grants from Deloraine House and Primary Health Tasmania.

Due to the flooding and damage to infrastructure, WinterFire had to be postponed.
