Traditional smoking ceremony

June 2017

THE LOCAL Aboriginal Community, with the Meander Valley Council, Deloraine House, Deloraine R.S.L., the Trade Training Centre and Aboriginal Community Pathways, invites all community members to the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week celebrations at the Cenotaph with the Welcome to Country and flag raising on 5th July at 10:45 a.m.

A traditional smoking ceremony complemented by cultural dancers and a fire-stick procession along the riverside to the new yarning circle will be a feature.  Deloraine House is hosting a light lunch and refreshments with cultural food, displays and music afterwards.

Other aspects of Tasmanian Aboriginal Culture will be shared through the new kooparoona niara Cultural Trail.

This trail, from the Train Park to the swimming pool, will be completed by August once the final planting of native flora is finished and the remaining signage, sculptures and mosaics have been meticulously created in the background.  The official opening is planned for September.
