A WET and muddy Saturday in May saw a win for the Deloraine Reserves and wins for the Scottsdale U/18’s and Seniors.

Scottsdale Division One Seniors finished on 89 to beat Deloraine 23. In the Division One Reserves, Deloraine won with 28 to Scottsdale’s 23 in what was a low scoring affair.  The U/18’s match was much the same, with Scottsdale coming out on top.  Shaun Donohue, President of the Deloraine Football Club, remarked how both the U/18’s and the Reserves games were a low scoring, close affair.

“But after a good start in the Seniors, we unfortunately went down by ten goals,” Mr Donohue said.

“The weather conditions suited Scottsdale a bit better than our boys.  We’re a young side with smaller bodies against a bigger-bodied team.  The seniors were too strong against us in the end.

“It was very wet and muddy all day. The rain didn’t let up at all.

“We’ve always had good games against Scottsdale.  It’s pretty much this year that they have a lot more experienced team than us.  Our team are young but will get better the more senior games they play.  We expected a few losses throughout the Year and our Boys will keep working hard to improve.  We had five under 18’s playing Seniors that day but due to the conditions it didn’t really suit the youngens”.

“The U/18’s and Reserves are going along pretty well, they are in the top five at the moment.  Our senior team is in a rebuilding phase at the moment with a lot of young players.  I just want all of our supporters and sponsors to know to stick with us as I am sure they will be a force to be reckoned with in the next few years.”  Josh Cameron, Jordan Loone, Matthew Griffin and Ben McLennan were amongst the best for the Seniors game.

Peter Fish, Secretary of the Scottsdale football club explained how in the Seniors, Deloraine kicked the first couple of goals in the first quarter but after that it was pretty much one way traffic.

“The reserves was a pretty close game, there wasn’t much in it.  Scottsdale copped a couple of injuries which left us a man or two short but we did well and deserved to win the match,” Mr Fish said.

“The weather was terrible driving rain.  It wasn’t heavy enough to cause any flooding but it was just cold and wet all day.

“We enjoy coming down and playing teams like Deloraine.  The club always looks after our players after the game.

Deloraine Football Club President, Shaun Donohue, was recently awarded a Sport and Recreation award for his long contribution to various sports.

“It was very surprising. Four weeks before the presentation I learned I was a finalist, it was down in Hobart. It was overwhelming to win it amongst all of the other amazing volunteers in the state.

“I’ve been involved in sport for a long time with junior footy into senior footy, as well as junior and senior basketball, helping to initiate a few things for the footy club from Beyond Blue to having days to raise money and awareness for cancer.”
