Mitchelson's milestones

November 2017 | Elizabeth Douglass

THIS YEAR, a gathering of over 100 members of the extended Mitchelson family and friends attended the launch of a book celebrating the life and times of Alan Mitchelson.

The Mitchelson family arrived from Canada to settle in northern Tasmania over 160 years ago. Their descendant Alan, who will be 92 in February, has been part of the Westbury community since his birth – growing up on the farm, attending local schools, working hard and raising a family – packing a great deal of experience and humour into an entire lifetime on the land.

The book, Alan Mitchelson, Stories of A Tough Old Farmer, has been written by Helene Gunn, one of Alan’s eight grandchildren.

Starting with many interviews of Alan, conducted by Helene, her mother Janette and father Ian, as well as many other family members, the book collects the stories of her grandfather’s life, family photos and a great deal of historical research and documentation into a fascinating history of this farming family.

Alan’s mother Nellie was a keen photographer and images of family life on the farm are a highlight of the book.

At the launch, Helene outlined the family history and shared some of Alan’s stories. Alan proudly signed copies of the book with Helene, and caught up with old friends over afternoon tea.

A display of family memorabilia included his old footy boots. One of the four remaining members of the Westbury Tigers team that won the 1948 State Premiership, Alan continues to make Westbury proud to this day.

Soft cover books are still available for $40.00. Contact Helene Gunn on 0437 209 475, hmitchelson89@gmail.com.
