THERE HAS been a boost to services for the senior’s community in Northern Tasmania.

An open day to commemorate the official launch of the new Italian Day Centre was held in late February, based at the Italian Club in Prospect.

Running for more than 25 years and providing services to older people in the south, Centre Manager, Elyse Lufi, is pleased that they can now help in the north as well.

“Our original focus was looking after the Italian migrant community in Tasmania, that focus has now expanded to anyone in the wider community, especially for seniors, who enjoy Italian food, culture and language.

“We offer services from hot meals at the day centre or delivered, to providing a place for getting people together to do fun activities such as art and craft, bingo, exercise classes, Italian card games, working on jigsaw puzzles or even just having a chat.”

Meander Valley Mayor Craig Perkins was among many of the attendees at the open day.

“The Australian Italian Club has been a significant cultural and community institution for many years. The new service is part of the evolution of the club and the role it plays in our community,” he said.

“The engagement of the Hobart Italian Day Centre’s resources to assist the Australian Italian Club is a logical extension and I’m sure will prove to be very successful.”

The day centre is open every Tuesday from 9.00am to 3.00pm at 414 Westbury Road, Prospect.
