CENTRAL NORTH Field Naturalist Inc (CNFN) is a community group dedicated to the exploration and preservation of Tasmania’s natural environment.

Starting as Deloraine Field Naturalists some 30 years ago, the group now includes members mainly in northwest and central north Tasmania as well as scattered over the state, mainland and overseas.

Each month, field trips visit a range of ecological sites (seashore to alpine; rainforest to dry sclerophyll) observing and studying flora, fauna, local geology and other things of interest.

Knowledgeable members help identify fungi, slime moulds, plants, birds and insects found in the field.

Occasionally, weekends are devoted to outstanding or more distant locations, often with guest experts on hand.

CNFN publishes The Natural News thrice yearly, with articles by members on particular areas of interest and expertise.

CNFN is also involved in other publications such as Munginabitta’s Country, the flora and fauna of Panatana and Marshalls Hill by Sarah Lloyd; and Beginner’s Guide to the Common Orchids of North West Tasmania by Ian Ferris and Phil Milner.
