New eagle, pleasing Prospect

September 2018 | David Claridge

PROSPECT HIGH School has had some major changes since redevelopment was undertaken, and now a key piece of its history is going to get a facelift.

The stone eagle out the front of the High School has been there since 1978. It has weathered over the years, but now, to keep up with the ‘new’ look of the school it’s time to get a new eagle.

Student Leader Board Co-Presidents, Hayden Johnstone and Jiranan Stearnes, spoke about the process behind getting a new eagle.

“The Eagle is the school’s crest, because when our school was founded, the original principal, Stan Morris stood on the site and saw a wedge tailed eagle fly over. He was amazed by it, so used its image for the school emblem.” Hayden said.

“This year, one of our major undertakings will be to create a new eagle statue for the school. It has weathered quite significantly and been damaged a few times.”

“It was originally made by Des Murray who was in the Arts Department. He was asked to create the original eagle as a greeting to people.” Jiranan added.

Prospect High has been in contact with the Meander Valley Council to appeal for someone with an artistic interest to help create the school’s new ‘greeting’.

“We’re looking for people in the Meander Valley area who could design it” Hayden said.
