Day for Ukraine at local school

Our Lady of Mercy Catholic School recently held a Day for Ukraine and raised much-needed funds for the Caritas Australia Emergency Appeal for Ukraine, which provides families with emergency food, water, shelter and hygiene support.

This appeal has been very generously supported by local businesses, raising more than $2000.

Mr Pat Colemen was overwhelmed by the generosity of local businesses when he approached them for donations saying, “many of our local businesses were thrilled to be able to support families in Ukraine”.

Principal Ms Mary Bennett said, “Our students are aware of the war in Ukraine and were keen actually to do something to assist families and other children.

“Our teachers have been working with all our children on ways that they too can be active peacemakers in their own family, our school and community.”

On the day, a votive focal point was set up in the Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, and all children were invited to light a candle from the school candle, add it to the votive space and spend some quiet time in prayer and reflection as led by their class teacher.

Many families donated supplies for the fundraiser, which students in Grades 3 - 6 used to make blue and yellow cupcakes and jelly cups; students sold these during their lunch break to raise funds for the appeal. Students also wore solidarity ribbons.

Caritas will provide essential emergency response, including basic food and hygiene kits and access to clean drinking water and fuel to vulnerable households to survive the cold weather conditions.
