Vale Nell Carr

Nell Carr was one of six children who grew up on the Dunorlan family farm.

After a brief time in Scotland, she and her family returned to Deloraine in 1953.

Nell’s popular garden column was published by The Western Tiers from 1980-2004 and the Meander Valley Gazette from 2014-2019.

Nell played a pivotal role supporting the evolution of Deloraine House in its formative years.

She was a foundation committee member of the newly formed Deloraine Environment Centre.

Always the very practical woman, in response to the polluting burn offs at the Tip, it was Nell who started the bottle and paper recycling in the large old blacksmith shed behind Deloraine House.

Without fail, she would come in every week and sort drum loads of bottles for later collection.

This was the catalyst for developing the Trash Transformers recycling management of the tip with the still very popular shop.

In 2017, Nell became a Paul Harris Fellow in recognition of a life-time of volunteer work with Meals on Wheels, Deloraine Film Society, Deloraine House, and Days for Girls.

She was also instrumental in the introduction of Adult Education courses in Deloraine.

Nell was a role model to generations of women, and an inspiration to everyone.

Rest in peace.
