Make time to Meander through the Valley

Ok, so you’ve stumbled off the overnight ferry at 7.30 am and about to make your way south.

The first thing to do is head towards Mersey Bluff and take a walk to the summit, let the family run loose a little and stretch your legs.

Head south on the highway to Elizabeth Town for a sit down brekky at the Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm and Google plot your way to Mole Creek. Is it too early for ice cream?

Then it’s time for either a tour of King Soloman’s Cave (at 10.30 am) which has a huge variety of formations with sparkling calcite crystals decorating the chamber, or a close encounter with the native wombats, echidnas and platypus on the 11.00am tour at Trowunna Wildlife Sanctuary.

On the way towards the Mole Creek Caves you might spot two magnificent Georgian properties - Old Wesleydale and Bentley - through the hawthorn hedges.

There’s no better place to head for lunch than the Mole Creek Hotel in Mole Creek, or head along Caveside Rd or Dairy Plains Rd over to the Meander Bridge Café for one of the best burgers around.

The relaxing drive to Meander, and then on to Deloraine (after lunch), will take you through some of the most picturesque, fertile dairy country in Tasmania.

In Deloraine, grab your hats for a short walk to burn off a few lunchtime calories.

Do the loop around the Meander River, a stroll up Emu Bay Rd to check out the sculpture trail and local crafty shops or walk around historic homes in nearby streets.

The Western Tiers Visitor’s Centre has some useful guides and a free EV charger!

Thirsty adults might want to tour the new whisky distilleries or vineyards in Meander Valley.

Drop into the Western Tiers Distillery in Westbury (10-4 pm, most days) while the kids spend some time following the Silhouette trail around historic Westbury.

Or further along the road, visit Entally Estate historical museum and gardens (10-4 pm, Wed-Sat) in Hadspen.

Making the most of day light saving time, you can still reach Launceston and squeeze in a walk through First Basin and Cataract Gorge, or reach Hobart by dark.

Email us your suggested itinerary for visitors to spend a day in Meander Valley before the evening ferry or the day of the morning ferry.
